St. Joseph Mo Sanborn card company

“DA Sanborn, a young surveyor from Somerville, Massachusetts, was hired by the Aetna Insurance Company in 1866 to prepare insurance cards for several cities in Tennessee. [..] Before joining Aetna, Sanborn conducted surveys and compiled an atlas of the city of Boston entitled “Insurance Map of Boston, Volume 1, 1867”. [..] The atlas contains twenty-nine large panels showing sections of Boston from 50 feet to an inch in scale. It is believed to contain the earliest insurance cards published by Sanborn.

The success of the Boston Atlas and the Aetna contract must have impressed the young surveyor of the importance of detailed and specialized maps to the fire insurance industry. After working for Aetna in Tennessee, he founded the DA Sanborn National Insurance Diagram Bureau in New York City in 1867. “
